Who We Are
First Congregational Church is an assortment of seekers and thinkers. We gather together to worship God (defined in many ways), to love others, to build community, to advocate for justice, and to explore what it means to be Christian in the 21st century.
First Congregational was founded in 1955 mostly by transplants from other parts of the country. The first members were frustrated that other Houston area churches did not speak to them spiritually. There were plenty of traditional and conservative churches as well as Unitarian churches, but none that embodied the liberal Christian tradition.
From the very beginning the members of First Congregational declared themselves to be an “open church,” that is a church open to all races and people, which was a radical idea for Houston in 1955. In 1998 the church proudly welcomed all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We hope you can find a home here as well!
